Simpler Services, Stronger Access: Designing Better Systems with AI
Led by: Jessica Lax & Davyd Smith
Complex forms, fragmented processes, and language barriers remain some of the biggest obstacles to accessing human services. This session explores how AI, when paired with strong design and behavioral insights, can help agencies simplify services rather than digitize complexity. Participants will examine how AI can support plain-language communication, reduce administrative burden, and improve access for multilingual and limited-literacy populations. The session emphasizes inclusive design choices, safeguards, and testing approaches that ensure AI supports equity rather than introducing new barriers.
This workshop is designed for program designers, service delivery teams, digital service staff, and anyone involved in improving client experience
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify opportunities to reduce administrative burden before applying AI or automation
- Apply inclusive design principles to AI-supported forms, workflows, and communications
- Understand risks associated with AI translation and accessibility tools—and how to mitigate them
- Assess whether AI-enabled service changes genuinely improve access for underserved populations
This workshop is part of an InnovateUS Series called : AI and Human Services: Innovating to Serve People Better
