Skills-Based Hiring in the Age of AI

AI is changing what "qualified" looks like — helping agencies write better job descriptions, identify the competencies that actually matter for a role, reduce unnecessary degree requirements, and modernize outdated hiring practices. This workshop looks at how HR and workforce leaders are using AI to open the door to a wider, more diverse talent pool without lowering the bar, and what it takes to put skills-based hiring into practice inside government systems.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand how AI tools can help identify core competencies and reduce reliance on degree requirements.

  • Apply lessons from state and nonprofit partners on implementing skills-based hiring practices.

  • Recognize the practical and cultural barriers agencies face in shifting from credential-based to skills-based hiring, and how HR professionals can lead that shift.

This workshop is part of an InnovateUS Series called : AI for Public HR Professionals
